Treasure Chest Cake

Treasure Chest Cake

I made this Treasure Chest cake for my son's 5th birthday party that was pirate themed. I used white cake mix in a sheet pan, cut it in half, and stacked one half on top of the other. I then used a casserole dish and added it to the top, to finish giving it it's shape.

I then made brown icing with food coloring, and iced the entire cake with it. I then hand piped on details like the lock, and handles on the chest. For the finishing details, I used black icing gels and toy gold coins for the base and the effect of the coins "in" the chest.

It took me about 2 hours to make the cake, it would have turned out better, but I was running late making the cake, but everyone at the party got the idea of what the cake was supposed to be.
