Coolest Treasure Chest Cake

My boyfriend and I made this treasure chest cake for our daughter’s 3rd birthday and she loved it! People could not believe we made the cake ourselves! I got the idea from this website and, although it was time consuming, it was not hard at all!

I baked 3 box cakes and put them in the fridge to cool overnight. I flattened and covered a cardboard box with aluminum foil for the cake board. I frosted the bottom cake and put it on the cake board. I frosted the top cake and set it aside. We then cut the third cake for the top of the treasure chest with dental floss. It worked great for making a nice clean cut.

I put that cake on the top and frosted it. We cut the excess pieces from the third cake into wedges to make “cake shims” and set them up on the bottom cake. We then carefully placed the top cake on the cake shims. I frosted a little bit of the underside that was showing.

The rest was easy! We used red fruit by the foot and yellow M&M’s to decorate the cake. We put graham crackers in a zip lock baggie and crushed them for the sand. I dipped the bottoms of the little pirate figures into icing to get them to stand up on the board. I then used candy bracelets, gold coins, and ring pops to hide the cake shims and to look like loot.

I am not very crafty so if I can do this anyone can!
