Coolest Treasure Chest Cake

I made this Treasure Chest Cake for my son’s 3rd party inspired by other cakes on this site. I used three layers of chocolate sponge – using a Bero recipe that uses evaporated milk which makes a really nice rich cake. Also the Bero recipe for milk chocolate icing that uses melted butter, milk, vanilla and icing sugar. I used the raised misshapen top section of one layer to one to create triangular wedges to prop up the lid.

I ordered various different styles of chocolate coins, candy necklaces and licorice wheels on line for decoration. Also mini Smarties and a jelly diamond for the keyhole.

My older son had recently had a Lego cake so I was inspired by this to use mini figures to decorate – this time a set of pirates I bought on Ebay – they were a good addition to the top of the chest.

It took a long time to decorate but was really effective and my sons and the other party guests were hugely impressed.
