Awesome Homemade Triceratops Cake

For my son’s birthday I made him a Triceratops Cake. I made the cake to replicate a stuffed triceratops that we got him as a present. The cake, frosting, and fondant were all homemade.

For the cake I used a simple white cake recipe, along with a simple butter cream frosting recipe. After baking and frosting the stacked cake rounds I used a bread knife to carve the basic shape. The tail was a little hard and required more frosting and piecing together with the scraps from the body. The degree of difficulty was raised in carving the mouth. Nowhere in the cake did I use another medium like, (like rice crispy treats).

After making a basic fondant batch, I separated it and added food coloring. After assembling and decorating the cake with the colored fondant, I used powdered food coloring and a stippling brush to add the shadowing, which resulted in an improved depth of color. The board was also covered roughly in fondant to resemble ground, and candy rocks gave the cake a little extra detail.

The cake was a big hit at the party.
