Homemade Twilight Cake

I made this Twilight cake for a 9 year old girl in my son's class. She wanted something "Twilight" so I decided to go with the book cover. I didn't really want to do the cake entirely black because black icing stains everyone's mouth so I just did a thin crumb layer of black (starting with chocolate icing)over a chocolate cake.

I drew a picture of the hands on butcher paper, cut it out and placed it on the cake to avoid putting black icing on that area. I sprinkled black sparkled decorating sugar over the black areas to dress it up and then outlined the hands with black icing using a round tip.

Then I pulled the drawing away and filled in the details. I used a real apple of course. I also dusted silver shimmer powder in areas to give it a chrome finish although the picture does not show that very well.

Just curious on how you iced the hands before you traced them with the black?
