Homemade Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake
This Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake was made using individual cupcakes which were dyed green inside with food colouring (to make it all the more caterpillary) covered in rolled icing to make the body and head, and a basic sponge cake mixture for the base, cut into a strawberry shape. There is homemade strawberry jam between the cake and the icing of the strawberry part of the cake. Shop bought rolled icing was used for covering, as dying home made or shop bought white didn't get the same brightness in the colours that I wanted.
I made holes with the end of a cocktail stick to make the "seeds". The body is held together with cocktail sticks but these are easily removed when cutting the cake. The Spikes are liquorice, but they don't leave any liquorice taste behind for people who don't like liquorice and you could probably use something else if you really can't use liquorice.
The flash on the picture made it all look a bit grey, but I can assure you it was DELICIOUS!
