Coolest Homemade Tiered Waterfall Cake

I made this waterfall cake for my son’s 4th birthday. He had seen a Diego cake online and requested something similar.

I baked two 9″ round cakes, one 8″ round cake, two 4″ cakes, and one cake in a springform pan (for the lower level). We cut the lower level just a bit to fit snug with the 9″ round layered cakes. The 8″ cake and two 4″ cakes were all situated so that the back of the cake went straight up and the front was stairstepped for the waterfall. The cakes were white chocolate and dark chocolate. Before frosting them I froze them to prevent crumbs during decorating.

Birthday cakes at my house have to taste good – that’s more important than looking good. So instead of decorator’s frosting I used a rich chocolate frosting in between all the layers and for the majority of the exterior. For the water and plants I used buttercream frosting tinted blue and green. To decorate we used chocolate rocks and a leaf tip to make the plants. To achieve the “whitewater” look I twirled a toothpick with white frosting on it between my fingers, just under the blue frosting.

Just before cake time at the party we put plastic jungle animals all over. It was a huge hit, and once the design was complete, not a complicated process at all.

  1. Awesome idea!!!! My two sons and I made this for the Blue and Gold banquet. We have a fellars cake bake where the scouts and their dads etc. make the cake with no help from the women and ends up being dessert. It came out fantastic and a lot of fun.
