Coolest White Sox Baseball Cake

This White Sox Baseball Cake was relatively simple to make. A friend of mine requested that I make it for her brother-in-law’s 30th. He is a White Sox fan so I decided to go with a baseball plate with a baseball on it. The cake was simply funfetti cake mix.

The plate was baked in a Wilton hexagon cake pan. I have the set so I used the largest one which is 15″ but I needed the shape to be closer to a baseball plate so I cut the bottom of the cake off. I covered it in white marshamallow fondant and then black on the edges since my husband explained to me baseball plates have a black edge to them.

For the White Sox logo, I blew up an image of it and cut it out on paper. Then I took my knife and traced around it on top of the fondant to come up with the logo.

The baseball was baked in the Wilton ball pan. I followed those directions and covered it in white fondant (a bit tricky). I made red fondant stitching and added it to the ball. I stuck the ball on top of the cake with a few dowel rods and it stayed in place well.

I was happy with how the cake turned out. I think the black, white and red contrast made it really stick out and look crisp and it was easy to make. It was a large cake and in order to get the ball, plate proportions right, it had to be. I’d say this cake would serve about 50.
