Cool Homemade Winter the Dolphin Birthday Cake

This year my son is really into Winter the Dolphin, star of the movie “Dolphin Tale”. He saw the movie, has the book and has visited her at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which is where he got a stuffed animal version of Winter and where I got my inspiration from.

I traced and cut out the outline of Winter on paper and transferred that onto a 9 X 13 sheet cake. I cut out the base of the cake from the outline and used the cut off corner pieces turned on their sides to build up a rounded layer in the center. I made cake ball batter from another 9 X 13 cake and 1 tub of frosting and used it to sculpt and build up all the rounded edges, fins and snout (no tail).

I made gray fondant with a 2 1/2 lb. tub of white fondant and about 20 drops of black food coloring until I got the shade that matched best. I then rolled it out and cut a hole in the center to so the sheet would fit over the dorsal fin. Once it was all smoothed down and edges trimmed, I used a circle piece to cover the dorsal fin.

The eyes are rolled balls of fondant tinted black with the black food coloring. White frosting was used all around the bottom edge for a smooth finish, and a black icing pen was used to line the mouth and for the lettering. I hope you enjoy it as much as my son did.
