Coolest Wizard of OZ Birthday Cake

I made this Wizard of OZ Birthday Cake for a friend of a friend’s niece. She was turning 5 and wanted a Wizard of Oz cake. My husband baked 2 9in round white cakes, leveled them, and stacked them. I frosted the cake and then covered it with white fondant. I made the yellow brick road using Wilson pre-colored yellow fondant. I cut it out free form and then etched a brick pattern on the road. I applied it to the cake in a wrap like method.

I hand drew her name on red fondant, cut it out, covered it with red decorating sugar, and then applied it to the front side of the cake with water. I cut out 1/2 inch blue squares and placed them in a checkered pattern on the top of the cake to represent the pattern on Dorothy’s dress. I cut two big chunks of pre-made Wilson white fondant and molded them free form into Dorothy’s slippers. (Looking back, I should have used red fondant). I then lightly wet the shoes down with water and a paintbrush and covered the shoes with red sugar. If I would have had decorating red glitter dust, I would have used it instead for a smoother finished look.

I applied the shoes in a stacked position on the top of the checkered blue squares. I cut a blue 5 out of blue fondant and applied it to the end of the yellow brick road. I also placed a few sugar flowers around the cake. I hand painted a rainbow on the front top of the cake using food coloring and a paintbrush. I placed a sugar daisy at each end of the rainbow. The finished product was sweet and perfect for a 5 year old Wizard of Oz fan. I hope she liked it!
