Coolest Yoda Birthday Cake

This was a Yoda Birthday Cake my sister and I made for my son’s 6th birthday which was a Star Wars themed party. We started with a rice krispie ball to make a form for Yoda’s head and neck. We then covered it with whipped icing and then the fondant went on for all the details. The challenge of this cake was to make it milk free for one of the guests that has a severe allergy to milk.

So we did the head and ears and kept it in the freezer for a couple of weeks. Then, the day before the party, we made the body out of two large circular cakes on a upside down cake pan (to give it enough height). We covered the body cakes in whipped icing and then put the head on with dowels through the head into the body to support the weight of the head. In hindsight we would not have made the head so big as we ended up having to make quite a large cake to get the body in proportion to the head. We also should have made rice krispie forms for his arms.

We used fondant which is really heavy and had some major slippage in the warm weather. We also used a green tube with duct tape for the light saber and slipped a small flash light (with nylon line attached – so we could get it out again) down the tube at the last minute to light up the saber. The ears we made out of gum paste as the fondant kept falling off the skewers that we used to put the ears on. We kept the ears off until the last minute before presenting the cake.

All in all, it was a fun cake to do and was a major hit at the party.
