Homemade Yu Gi Oh Birthday Cake
I made this Yu Gi Oh Birthday Cake for a friend of mine's son, who was turning six. This cake is a lot easier to make than it looks, it just takes time and patience.
I started with an outline of the character on paper. I then took an Exacto knife and cut out the lines somewhat, very gently, to make a stencil. You want to be careful not to cut out things that need to stay white. This took a lot of time, but a good stencil is all you need to achieve just about ANY picture on a cake.
I then rolled out a 50-50 mixture of white fondant and gumpaste (available at local craft stores or cake shops). I took the same-size pan of my cake and laid it on top of the 50-50 mixture, bottom-down and with a pizza cutter cut around to make a circle shaped "canvas". I placed the "canvas" on a foil-covered cake board (if you put it on parchment or wax paper, those absorb moisture and may end up leaving you with a wrinkled canvas).
I placed the stencil on the canvas, and then I then used canned, edible spray color (black) (Wilton) to lightly spray the stencil. It gave me a great outline to fill in. I took gel colors, beginning with black to outline, and then filled in like a paint-by number. I thinned down some of the colors with clear vanilla because if you use water, it may "melt" your fondant.
I let the painting dry overnight and then simply (gently) slid it off the foil board and onto the cake. You may need to use a spatula to loosen it up before sliding. It is also useful to put corn starch on the board before placing the canvas on it, to keep it from sticking.
The cards are simply rolled-out gumpaste cut to size, then painted black, and then piped with swirls.
