Cool Homemade Curious George Cake

I made this Curious George cake for our niece Hayden’s first birthday party. I used a few of the ideas from this very website and designed my own version.

The hat is made from two 6” round cakes stacked with one-half of a sports ball pan on top. The base of the hat is two cardboard rounds covered in fondant. Between the base and the hat I put a basic fondant rope to cover the seam.

“George” is made from pieces of a sheet cake that I cut free handed with one-half of a sports call pan for his head and another for his tummy. George is covered in buttercream. The ears were a little bit of a challenge but a few wooden skewers solved that nicely. I also skewered his head to his hat just to make sure it didn’t go anywhere.

If I did it again I would frost the head, let it dry, and then assemble it – as it was here the back of the head was very hard to frost once it was on the body and hat.
