I made this Homemade Despicable Me Birthday Cake for my son's 3rd birthday, since Despicable Me is his current favorite movie. As far as cake-carving goes, this one was especially easy (as I actually didn't have to carve anything), it just involved a good deal of attention to detail and time.
The base cake is just a 12x18 sheet cake. The minions are both made of 6" round cakes (the little one is 2 - 6" rounds, the big one is 4 - 6" rounds), each topped with half of the Wilton sports ball pan. I used bubble tea straws (cut to the right length) as supports inside the cakes, and in the base cake, under the minions, so the weight of them didn't crush the sheet cake.
With the exception of the hair, arms, and "G" symbol (which were all made with gum paste), all the detail work is just molded fondant. For the goggles (which unfortunately broke apart when I was fitting them onto the big minion), I just let the fondant set around a soda can until it was hard. Then I sprayed them with edible silver spray. All the fondant is homemade, just a simple marshmallow fondant recipe.
All in all, it took me about 20-25 hrs over four days. Considering this is only the 3rd cake I've ever "carved," it's not too bad, even with all the little imperfections all over it!

For my son's 2nd birthday gathering I made a Despicable Me Minion Birthday Cake.
He is entirely cake, buttercream and fondant. I had to cover his dome cake head with fondant and add it to his body which was already covered with fondant. Then I placed the black strip for his glasses to cover the gap (though I didn't get his eye piece exactly right and he looks a little sinister- which I wasn't going for). But overall he's a pretty cool little minion.
He is entirely vanilla cake layered with rootbeer buttercream frosting and covered with marshmallow fondant (I find my kids prefer it than the other stuff). His arms and little tiny legs are completely fondant while his body is the cake in fondant.
He took me 3 days to make only due to the fact that I had 3 other cakes to finish for my son's pinewood derby's silent Auction the day before.
These are my little minions! Each one is made of two 6” rounds covered in yellow fondant and decorated with gum paste details. The goggles I made the night before. They are strips of fondant that were wrapped around household items that were roughly the same size and then the next day I airbrushed them. It’s really important that you make the goggles out of fondant because you have to cut them to fit the rounded head of the minions. Gum paste will dry too hard.
I made the hair out of gum paste though you could use fondant but I’d give them at least 3 days to dry if you do. I used my extruder to make the strands of hair.
Hope you enjoy them!

I made this Despicable Me Minion Cake for my boyfriend for his 19th birthday in March. I was SO pleased with it!
I used a rectangle baking tin for the body, and cut it in half to make the two layers, and then shaped it. I used vanilla butter icing to sandwich the layers, then also to stick on the coloured ready roll icing, and the arms etc. The arms were made of cut off's and the feet were just made of icing. I coloured all of the ready roll icing myself, they aren't as bright colours as I'd have liked, but it was as best as I could do with what I had!
