I my name is Regina and I make diaper cakes as a hobby for friends and family as centerpieces for baby showers. Now I am making them for gifts.
First I get 2 bags of diapers, new born & size ones & roll them all up separately then place a clear rubber band around each one. Once I get them all rolled up then I start by placing a bottle on the table with a rubber band around it. I start adding the rolled diapers into the rubber band until I have 40 diapers on the bottom layer, then I place that bottom layer on a plastic tray.
Then I start the 2nd layer with a soft foot ball in the middle with a rubber band around it & keep adding diapers to it until I have 28 diapers for the middle section. For the very top I have a sippy cup with a rubber band and add 8 rolled diapers.
Now you have all 3 layers for your diaper cake. Then you stack them on top of each other & place bamboo sticks from the top down to the bottom of the diaper cake so it will not move while transporting it. Then I add some wash cloths, passies, rattles, baby oil, a lot of little things that a new mom can use for the baby. Then I decorate it with ribbons & hot glue little baby bottles & diaper pins all around the cake.
This Diaper Cake Idea was made for my girlfriend's sister-in-law. This is the first diaper cake either of us had made and had a lot of fun doing it.
Sister-in-law loves camouflage so of course we incorporated it into her cake, adding accents of pink and brown in other areas of the cake as well. We bought a 96pack of size 2 diapers and used about 75, the rest are going in the diaper bag at her shower. For the middle of the cake we started with a big bottle of baby powder and topped it with the bottle. Two onsies, a pair of pants, wash clothes and a travel size set of baby items were used as well. Pink and Brown hair bows were attached to the ribbon. The base was just a cut out piece of cardboard, spray painted and then ribbon added to the outside to hide it, ribbon also brown. The finishing touch was the little pink pacifiers bought from a craft store hung around the cake for effect.
We loved making this cake and we are pretty sure that we enjoy it more than the mother to be will.
I made this Duck Diaper Cake Idea for a girlfriend at work. It was for her first baby, Alice, that is due in February. She wanted a "Rubber Duck" themed baby shower and wished for the cake to go along with that theme.
It has a total of 4 tiers and I used about 150 diapers total. It has 2 blankets that I used on it, and 2 hooded towels to accent 2 of the tiers and to cover the board it was on. I bought lotions, soaps, wipes, and toys at the local Walmart. I bought the 2 crowns on the front, made of foam paper from the local craft store. I got plain letters at the Walmart and painted them accordingly. All items are either taped, glued to the accent ribbon around each tier, or I made ribbon hangers for the items so they wouldn't be ruined.
I spent a total of $80.00 on this cake, 32 being on bulk diapers from Sams (great diaper cake deal). Paper grass was added between 2 of the tiers to give it a little accent as well.
