I started out with 2 bowls to make the head and a rectangle pan for the body and 3 round pans for the wings of this Dragonfly Birthday Cake. I think if I was going to do it again I would use all rectangle pans and 2 bowls. I used Pyrex bowls and lined them with parchment paper to be sure that the pieces would come out without breaking.
I made part of the cake chocolate and the rest was regular white cake which I added pink food coloring to the pan I used for the body. I had a great time doing it and it was loved by all!!
This Dragonfly Cake is the first cake I've made, it was for my sister's 18th birthday. I didn't have a lot of tools to work with, iced the cake with chocolate icing, then made a template for the dragonfly. I traced around the template with a toothpick then drew the outline with a icing tube.
Then 'coloured it in' with the edible glitter tubes I had bought. Same theory with the lettering, AVR is my sister's initials. I pre-made the wee flowers and leaves, and added once they had hardened a bit. It was awesome, fun to make, not bad for a first effort I thought.
This homemade Dragonfly Birthday cake, made for a friend at work, was a sheet cake made out of two boxes of mix, then entirely carved.
I decorated it with funfetti cake white frosting, black and white sparkle gel and sugar crystals. The wings were lattice cake decoration and white sugar crystals, which were just sprinkled on; any color can be used.
