Homemade Drum Cake

Homemade Drum Cake

For my husband returning from being on tour drumming for 7 months I really wanted to this Drum Cake. I followed the drum cake recipe from another submission on this site and used 4 chocolate fudge box recipes, frosted it with chocolate frosting overnight and used marshmallow fondant. It's cheap and tastes great.

I used 1 and a half bags of mini marshmallows, 2 tablespoons of water, microwaved it 20 seconds and stirred until well combined. Then you just use as much powdered sugar until it is not sticky anymore. Roll it out as thin or thick as you want. Then I smoothed it over the entire cake and trimmed and used extra fondant for the rims.

I used Kit Kats for the lugs and Wilton silver to paint the details. I used a violet Wilton color which came out more of a blue tone. I used light cocoa candy melt and squeezed from bag on both sides of Kit Kats.

The cymbal was a paper plate spray painted gold and I glued the logo from a cutout from internet. I used a wooden skewer wrapped in foil. It took all day to do it but it was fun to make!

Homemade Drummer Cake

Homemade Drummer Cake

I made this drummer cake for a family member who plays the drums. I got this picture from Clipart. It was actually a girl with orange hair and pig tails that stuck straightup. I took off the pig tails and then it kind of looked like a boy wearing a hat so I moved a couple lines around to really make it look like a baseball hat.

I traced it onto parchment and transferred the image with piping gel. I outlined the whole thing in black and added all the colors. I tried to do a mahogany wood color for the drums but had a tough time with that one. I think the green and yellow shells really made the cake!

At the end I decided to add his name on the front drum so that there wasn't too much gray. The family loved it, everyone thought it was very cool even though it was just clipart!

Coolest Drum Cake 5

Drum Cake

Drum Cake

My son, Sam, loves music and wanted a drum cake for his 4th birthday. He also wanted an orchestra on top! Since it was his 4th birthday, I told him I'd make an instrument for each year of his life.

The cakes are homemade butter layer cakes covered in buttercream and then in rolled fondant. I used more fondant to create the rims and the details are molded fondant and spaghetti painted black. Edible gold dust was painted on for realistic detail.

The tops of the drums are painted with clear luster dust. The instruments are molded, painted gumpaste. The drumsticks are also gumpaste, marbled brown and molded and the Happy Birthday sign is rolled fondant written on with edible marker.

Beautiful

The cake is beautiful!!! How did you color the fondant on the sides of the cake? Also, what are the clips made of?

Thanks!
by: Jill H.

The fondant was actually hand painted with food coloring and water. The colors wouldn't have been as intense if I had mixed them into the fondant - and it gave it a nice natural sheen!

The clips were made from molded gumpaste and spaghetti that I painted with edible gold dust and vodka, and in the other cake, black food coloring. This is still his favorite cake. The best part was when he ate the drumsticks and got looks from people who assumed they were real :)

Love it

Your cake is awesome. I want to make a cake for my son's 17th birthday. He is in a Drum Corps. and
plays snare. I hope when I try to make him a snare drum cake that it will turn out as beautiful as yours did. I am not a baker but I am going to try. Any tips?

About the cake

Hi its my boyfriend's 21st birthday coming up and his a drummer and I love your cake design. Could you possibly make one to send to Devon and how much would it cost?

Thanks!
by: Jill H.

The spaghetti used is uncooked, to hold shape and be able to be covered with fondant. I cant ship any of my cakes, but I can drive them anywhere within reasonable distance from Maryland. This was such a fun challenge to make and still one of my son's favorite cakes 3 years later!

You rock! Literally.

I plan to make a cake similar to yours for my son's 15th bday this weekend, he is a drummer/percussionist in his school's marching band. They are doing a car show this weekend and I wanted to make a cake that reflected his interest. You did an awesome job. Just have a couple of questions. Did you use regular liquid food color or is it the gel food coloring? Also you said you used "spaghetti noodles", is this the long noodles or elbow noodles?
