Homemade Dump Truck Cake

Homemade Dump Truck Cake

I made this dump truck cake for my friend's son's 4th birthday. This is the second cake I have made from scratch and decorated. I am just learning still and my friends and family are kind enough to let me experiment for their kids.

I made a chocolate cake from scratch which makes up the body and cab of the cake. I used Rice krispie treats as the wheels and for the bucket of the truck. I covered the chocolate buttercream frosting then with MM fondant. I found it very easy to make the fondant but not to color. I still have a lot to learn on how much gel food coloring to use to get the desired color of fondant.

I filled the bucket part of the truck with the left over chocolate cake I had from cutting out the shape of the truck. I added some chocolate buttercream frosting, chocolate sprinkles, and some candy rocks.

Dump Truck and Smash Cake

Dump Truck and Smash Cake

This is a cake that I did for a one year old birthday. The mom had sticker of what she wanted the dump truck and smash cake to look like.

Both cakes are frosted with butter cream frosting. For the Dump Truck, I baked 3 bread loaf pans. Cut in one in half, and stacked, the bottom is holding up the main part of the truck and the other half is the cab. The sides of the truck is the other loaf pan. The "sand" and "dirt" are graham cracker crumbs. The smash cake was made out of an 8inch round cut to look like a stop sign.

Dump Truck Cake

Dump Truck Cake

I got all my ideas for a dump truck cake from this web site. A little bit from each cake I saw.

I cut out the shape of the truck and iced the brown first. Then the yellow. I used two donuts for each tire and cocoa puffs for the dirt.

Very simple to do. My son loved his 'beep, beep' cake!
