The Giant Elmo Cake!

The Giant Elmo Cake!

I made this Elmo cake for my son's 2nd birthday. I have never decorated a cake before. He is obsessed with Elmo so I decided to tackle an Elmo cake. We were having so many people over that the standard Elmo cake pan wouldn't make enough cake for everyone. So, I made a 16 x 2 round cake to set Elmo on.

I used 5 cake mixes total; 3 for the 16" and 2 for Elmo. I also wanted to fill the cake but I didn't want to chance cutting a 16" cake in half. Instead I poked holes in it and piped in lemon filling with a pastry bag without a tip. I iced the entire bottom layer and added Elmo on top. I did the top of Elmo with a large star tip and just frosted the sides and pulled them with a spatula.

I did his eyes and nose with an offset small spatula. I did the lettering with black gel icing. The cake pan didn't totally fit in my oven since it was so big so I added the sprinkles to mask some of the uneven-ness of the cake. In total this took me 5 hours.

Everyone loved the cake and couldn't believe I made it and didn't buy it. After all that I am very luck that my husband gave me an excellent back massage!

Elmo Cake

Elmo Cake

My friend and I wanted to make my youngest son's 1st birthday cake one that was memorable, at least for us. So because he loves Elmo, we thought to an Elmo cake.

I baked 2 9 1/2 by 11 box cakes. We then took one of many of the Elmo stuffed animals and traced on cardboard, Elmo himself.

Because of the size of the cake pans, we kept the arms and legs off of the first cake and used the second cake to cut arms, legs, eyes and nose out.

I used store bought white frosting and LOTS AND LOTS of red food coloring. I put aside some white frosting to make Elmo's eyes. You also need a little bit of black food coloring to for Elmo's pupils.

The nose was a bit tricky because it's a funny shade of orange but with a little bit of red frosting and a couple drops of yellow food coloring, you get the correct orange for Elmo's nose.

To make Elmo look furry, I took a butter knife and dabbed it all around Elmo to make the icing stand up.

It was an absolute hit and all the kids knew it was Elmo.

Elmo Cake

Elmo Cake

I made this Elmo cake for my best friend's son's 1st birthday. We have a deal going on that I make the cakes for her kids and she makes the sausage rolls for my kids, its a great deal. Anyway she waned an Elmo cake as Jed was so into him and just had to have it.

I made this one by baking up 2 huge cakes in my roasting pans and using a picture of Elmo that I printed from the net and made to size as my template. It really wasn't that hard, although I did need to use a little patience when trying to get it the right size.

I then used butter icing, coloured using a paste from the cake decorating shop ( these give a much richer colour) to give Elmo his fur. I added the coloured balls with Jed's name on them to give a bit more colour to the whole thing. These were just made out of smaller cakes and I used M&M's to write the letters of his name.

Hello. I really enjoyed making this cake. I made this for my cousins 2 year old little girl. The smile on her face was priceless. I used the Wilton Elmo cake pan and additional cupcakes. For the Elmo cake I used Devils food cake and Strawberry Cake for the cupcakes. I even used real chocolate chips for the cookies. I really enjoyed this cake. Thanks for visiting.
