I made this homemade Cookie Monster and Elmo cake for my nephew's 1st birthday. I used a 9x13 pan and 3" ball pan for each head (chocolate chip cake). I made an extra Elmo head (because Elmo is my nephew's favorite) for the smash cake which actually turned out better than the one on the cake because I did it last. I realized after starting that I should have done the smash cake 1st for practice.
I put 2 other ball cakes in a food processor to make fine bread crumbs then added some of the icing to it so I could form the eyes and noses. I then froze them so I could work with them more easily. I dipped them in melted chocolate, used toothpicks to hold onto them and to keep them on the cakes (don't forget to remove the toothpicks before serving the cake).
I USED A 10 IN ROUND FOR THE BOTTOM AND A INCH ROUND FOR THE TOP I USED SPRING FORM PANS THERE THE EASIEST TO GET OUT I COOLED THEM IN THE FREEZER (THERE EASIER TO FROST PARTIALLY FROZEN) FOR THE BOTTOM I USED A BUTTER KNIFE THO SPREAD THE DIFFERNT COLORS ON THE CAKE FOR TO MAKE THE RED FROSTING I BUY CHERRY FLAVORED FROSTING (ANY GROCERY STORE) AND WILTONS GEL FROSTING ONE IT TASTES BETTER ANDU GET A TRUER RED INSTEAD OF USING WHITE FROSTING AND ENDING UP WITH A BASICLY PINK WHICH TASTES PRETTY GROSS THE OTHER COLORS I JUST USED BUTTER CREAM FROSTING AND WILTONS FOOD COLORING THE CAKE IS JUST STORE BOUGHT CAKE MIX SO IS THE FROSTING FOR THE TOP LAYER I JUST USED BUTTER CREAM FROSTING AND BOUGHT THE CANDY ELMOS AND STARS AT A PARTY STORE
This Homemade Elmo & Cookie Monster Cake was, hands down the most awesome cake I've ever done. I sculpted the heads out of rice crispy treats and the bodies were carved entirely from cake. I used a grass tip for Elmo's fur and a basket tip for Cookie Monster's fur.
The eyes and noses were made of fondant. I made the sign with melting chocolates in molds I made from a 1" metal pipe, a butter dish tray and half of a circle mold. The cookie is real and the crayons and candles I purchased at the store.
This cake was so awesome no one wanted to cut it, but when we did everyone enjoyed eating it as much as they did looking at it!

One of my girlfriend’s daughter’s turned 1 and Elmo was her thing so, she got my first Elmo cake. This is one of my first portrait cakes using buttercream as my “paint”. This is a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. I printed Elmo’s face, cut it out, traced the outline with a toothpick and copied the details by eye. #2 round tip to outline, the grass tip for his facial hair, and a mini offset spatula to give smooth and wave in other areas. 2004, 2005ish
My son loves Elmo so for his 2nd birthday party I made an Elmo cake and also cupcakes the cake took about 2 hours to decorate the cake but it was really fun and everyone loved it. I used one and a half containers of icing for the cake and one container for the cupcakes
