Fairy Cake

My daughter loves fairies, so for her 3rd birthday – a fairy cake it was! This was a double layer cake with vanilla cake on the bottom (with red food colouring swirled through, at the birthday girls request) and gluten free butter cake on top (Basco cake mix – tasted great! had a couple of gluten free guests but no one could tell that it was gluten free.)

I frosted each cake separately, chilled them to firm them up a bit to make it easier to cover, then coloured some white icing with food colouring (use disposable gloves), rolled it out and covered the cakes. Cookie cutters made the flowers and spots. The flowers and the roll of icing between the layers helped cover any messy bits.

I made the fairies out of salt dough (tons of different recipes for this on the internet) so that once baked, painted and varnished, my daughter could keep them to play with.

She loved it and the fairies (which have been named) now live on her bookshelf as a reminder of her special day.

  1. Hi there
love your cake and am going to make one for my girl…just wondering what you made the flowers and spots out of? do the spots just stick on to the icing by themselves? thanks!
