Homemade Farm Combine Cake

This Farm Combine Cake was made for my farm loving son's 3rd birthday. We already did the tractor cake for a previous birthday so I had to come up with something different and he wanted a combine cake. I looked all over internet trying to find a picture to go off of but could not find a single one. I used his toy combine to get the shape as close as possible and this is what I ended up with.

I made this cake using a 9 x 13 cake. To hold up the back end of the combine I constructed a platform with wire (actually a wire clothes hanger) and cardboard covered in wax paper. From there I cut the cake to get the basic shape of the combine. For frosting I used tube frosting, which I would not do again because it didn't want to hold together well which is why I did not get a smooth finish.

The wheels were made by forming rice crispy treats. For a first attempt at making a combine with nothing to go off of I thought it turned out alright. My son loved it and that's all that mattered!

It was Hunter's 3rd birthday party and we had it at the local petting farm. What better to do than a Farming Tractor Cake Design. And what tractor is more famous than the John Deere? The 3D cake was a little harder than expected, but well worth it in the end.

The base of the cake (the field) was two 13X9 cakes. One yellow and one chocolate. They were covered in chocolate icing and topped with crushed Oreo cookies to simulate the cultivated field. We thought about drawing corn stalks around the edges but didn't have quite the artistic talent, so we went with the simple green and yellow blossoms. The tractor itself, along with the trailer, were loaf pans. The wheels were then cut out of 13X9s. Toothpicks did a wonderful job holding them to the tractor.

We made rails on the trailer out of wooden dowels, held together by hot glue. Rice Krispie treats were used to simulate bails of hay. We added little animals to the cake to give it just the extra touch it needed. Everything came together wonderfully, and we hope this design can help many other little farm boys!!

My daughter-in-law made a cake similar to this one and it was the hit of his 4th birthday party. His maternal grandparents are farmers with John Deer equipment. Collin has everything John Deer and believe he will take over the farm when the grandparents retire. Got a bailer from grandpa and said, "Oh, that's what I always wanted!" He is such a blessing to have in the faminly!

John Deere

I made this cake for my brother by using (2) 13x9 cake pans. I used two of them because I wanted chocolate and vanilla.

How I decorated it was by using printable houses (to cut out and glue).

After I put them together I glued a piece of Popsicle stick to them to stick on the cake..

I made the fence with Popsicle sticks and the little farm animals were printed off the computer also and a stick glued to them.

This is one way of showing someone you don't have to buy everything to put on a cake. My way was a lot cheaper.

Homemade John Deere Birthday Cake

I made this John Deere cake for my nephews second birthday.

I cut the cake into a tractor shape, frosted donuts for the wheels and used oreos to simulate dirt. Tip: don't use plastic wrap. My piping for the face stuck to it when I took it off.

The kids still loved it though!
