Farmyard Birthday Cake

I made this cake for my son’s 1st birthday. The cake is a 9×11 carrot cake with extra raisins and coconut. (The recipe called for nuts but I left them out and replaced them with the raisins and coconut since so many small children were coming for the party.) This was to represent the soil and things that grow on a farm. It is iced with chocolate icing for the dirt. The grass is coconut tinted green. The path to the barn was made by putting a line of raisins on either side of the door and then filling with crushed cookies. The barn and tractor were coloring pages that I resized, colored and cut out. I made them stay in the cake by taping toothpicks to the bottom. I also backed them with 4 layers of paper (or you could use cardstock) to make them more sturdy. The animals are regular plastic animals from a toy set.

The only tip I have is to make sure you tint the coconut early on, then spread it out to dry before putting it on the cake. You can spread it on a layer of wax paper.
