This Finding Nemo cake is my first cake. I made a rectangular butter cake, cut it horizontally and filled it with lemon curd. I then covered the cake with butter cream. I made 5 different colours of blue fondant and mixed them together to get the swirled effect. The characters are all made from gum paste.
I rolled the gum paste very thin. I used pictures printed off of the internet. I put shortening on the back so they wouldn't stick while I used a sharp blade to cut through the paper and gum paste. Then I peeled off the paper, and set the gumpaste aside over night to dry. I then did my best eyeballing to draw on and colour in the characters with edible markers.
The coral, rocks and grass were made from gumpaste and royal icing. I covered blobs of royal icing in sprinkles to get the rock looking effect and the same with the long standing ones. This made it very brittle which is why they are mostly placed on the sides of the cake. I used gum paste that I watered down to glue everything on. I used wooden skewers to hold). Then I brushed on a bit of blue pearl dust.
This Nemo cake was for my son's 2nd birthday. My son loves Nemo, so my sister and I decide to make this Nemo cake for him. We decorated the top of the cake with blue and green color mist food spray to give the cake an aqua look and used blue sparkle gel to write a message. We also made blue sea grass with tip#233.
I made Nemo out of one batch of rice krispies treats. I molded the whole body as one except for the two fins. The fins I molded separate and inserted 2” lollipop sticks into Nemo and the fins. I let Nemo set out on the counter for a couple of days so that the rice krispies would dry and be hard. I then drew on Nemo so that we had a guide to help us as we piped on the different colors.
The frosting on Nemo was the ready to use Wilton’s White Decorator Icing; we used icing colors black and orange. We piped in black using tip#3 and filled in the white and orange with tip#16. The eyes (Cindy) use tip#12 and with a spatula and a little water to form and smooth the eyes.
This cake was lots of fun to make. Thanks Cindy for your help!
I made this Finding Nemo cake for my son's 1st birthday. Ahead of time, I made frozen buttercream transfers of Nemo, Pearl and Squirt. (If you Google "frozen buttercream transfer" you will find a detailed explanation of this method. It is time consuming but gives a clean look and almost a 3D look to your characters.)
I made 2 9x13 layers of boxed cake mix. I iced the cake in sky blue buttercream and then placed the characters on it. I piped seaweed on the top and sides of the cake with a leaf tip. I piped coral on the top and sides with a star tip. I piped plants on the top and sides with a tip used for writing, and used the same tip for the letters and bubbles.
Using a wide circular tip, I piped large swirls along the bottom border of the cake and then sprinkled rainbow nonpareils over the border for a "bottom of the sea" effect.
Colors used for this cake were:
Nemo - orange, black Pearl - violet & rose, black Squirt - juniper green, no-taste red, brown, black Also used - sky blue, Kelly green, violet, buttercup yellow.
