Homemade Fishbowl Birthday Cake Idea

I made this Fishbowl Birthday Cake Idea by making two round cakes. I put a layer of buttercream icing and stacked them. Put it in the fridge to set/firm. Then I trimmed the top and bottom to make flat spots, and stood it up. Then covered it in a thin layer of white buttercream icing, and put it back in the fridge to set. Once the icing was firm, I iced the whole cake blue.

I made the starfish, corals, seaweed, and little fish from Starburst candies, just use cornstarch on your fingers to keep the candy from sticking, and put on eyes with a toothpick dipped in black icing color. The bigger fish are sour 5 cent candies, and the rocks are made from Nerds candies.

The "empty" part of the bowl is white buttercream frosting piped on, then spread out and sprayed lightly with blue Wilton cake spraypaint. The rim was applied with a large piping tip.

This is a very cute idea although I was wondering if you set the cake on its side for this?

Is this cake stood on it's side?

Thank you, I took the idea from this site!:) And, yes I trimmed a flat spot off of the top and bottom of a round cake and stood it onto the flat spot.:)

Fish Bowl Cake

Fish Bowl Cake

I saw this Fish bowl cake on this site and loved it so much I changed my sons theme from race cars to Under the Sea.

I used boxed cake mixes and canned icing. I baked the cake the day before the party and assembled and decorated the cake the day of. I also hot glued three fish with fishing line in an upside bowl and baked fish and dolphin shaped sugar cookies the day before.

Between the bottom 2 tiers and the fish bowl is a round piece of cardboard to keep the bowl steady. Also on top the bowl is another round piece. I iced the cake and while the icing was still wet I stuck all the decorations and candy rocks on.

I had a blast making the cake and every one really loved it. Have fun!

Homemade Fish Bowl Cake

Homemade Fish Bowl Cake

This Fish Bowl Cake was my first attempt at fondant and I enjoyed it. I mixed it with blue gel color but didn't mix thoroughly so it would give a watery look. I used a thoroughly dishwasher cleaned CD stack cover cut to the right height (clear plastic) to hold the bowl firmly in the middle. I know they make things like that for cakes but I used what I had on hand.

I assembled it on site adding mildly colored water at that time and used plastic fish from the dollar store, inside. The fish were cut with a cookie cutter and applied. All the applied items were fondant. The fish on top was plastic. It fed 70 people with EASE!
