I made this Hamburger Cake Design for my brother for his 20th birthday. He said he wanted a really big hamburger, unfortunately for him I didn't take him literally and made a cake instead. He loved it. This was my very first attempt at decorating any cake!
I made two 20cm round cakes. One vanilla cake cut in half with the top half carved in a dome shape for the bun. The 'meat patty' was a chocolate cake with the top cut off covered in chocolate frosting then covered in crushed Oreo cookie crumbs. Lettuce, tomato, cheese and onion are made of rolled out marshmallow fondant (so easy and fun to make! - It's just icing sugar added to melted down marshmallows and mixed together to form the fondant 'dough'), vanilla frosting for 'mayo' and to ice top bun I made a brown colour out of red, yellow and black food colouring (unfortunately I think I went a bit too far in the deepness of the brown. I used toasted pine nuts for the sesame seeds which gave the cake a really nice texture.
This cake is actually from a cake competition in which I participated in March 2010 for FCCLA. What inspired me to make the homemade big mac cake design was that my mom is a manager at McDonald's, and many of my relatives also work there.
The theme of the cake competition was retirement, and it fit with the cake because I wrote alongside it.. " I'm loving it, Retirement!".. On top the seeds are real sesame seeds, and I believe they are toasted. For better appearance, the buns of the big mac are yellow cake and the meat is chocolate. In total it is a five layer cake.
To add texture to the meat, I added chocolate sprinkles. The hardest part was getting the color! Oh, and I placed gold in regional and state level. Unfortunately, my school didn't go to nationals because it was during the summer. Along side is a large fry box with cake slices left over covered in yellow fondant. Hope you enjoy!
I made this simple Hamburger Cake Design for my father's birthday. The bun is made of vanilla cake baked in a 10 inch round pan for the bottom, and in a glass Pyrex bowl, to give the rounded shape to the top. The hamburger is actually brownies, made in a 10 inch round pan.
I used colored marshmallow fondant to make the lettuce and tomatoes, randomly placed. I used vanilla buttercream icing between the layers, and actually wanted it to show as mayonnaise. I colored the buttercream icing to frost the "bun", then topped it with rice krispie cereal for the sesame seeds. I baked the cake and brownies the day before decorating, and also had the fondant already made.
The entire cake went together in about 30 minutes. With many tastes, textures, and colors, it was a big hit.
I used one 8in pan and 8in Pyrex round bowl for the top and bottom buns of this Hamburger Birthday Cake. I colored white butter cream frosting a tan and used rice krispies for the sesame seeds look. For the hamburger I use a 9in pan so the burger could hang over the buns.
I frosted the burger(chocolate cake) with chocolate frosting then added cocoa krispies to the edges to make it look like a burger. The lettuce, tomatoes and cheese were made of fondant. I then piped red, yellow and white for the condiments.
