I first made the hamburger cake sort of by accident. The young man I worked with at the time always ordered a hamburger every morning from Sonic when we ordered breakfast. His 21st birthday was coming up and I decided to make him a Hamburger Cake.
After making the cake, my husband said "It needs an order of fries". So, back to the kitchen I went and decided to make the fries out of peanut butter fudge due to the color. Well, I think it turned out pretty good. I began to get orders for the Burger and Fries cake. Since that day in 1999, I probably have had over 200 orders for the cake.
Last month, a lady I sub for at the school cafeteria wanted a Hamburger, Hot Dog and an order of fries for her daughter's 18th birthday slumber party. So here is the result of that order.
I made this Hamburger Birthday Cake for my son's 11th birthday. For the bun I baked 2 yellow cakes and for the hamburger I used 1 devil's food cake. All were baked using an 8" round cake pan. I iced the hamburger using chocolate frosting and then used chocolate sprinkles to give it a beefy look.
I covered the top and bottom bun with fondant that I dyed. The sesame seeds are almond slices. All of the vegetables are also fondant that I dyed except the onions. The french fries are sugar cookies that I cut into strips after they baked. I used red tube frosting for the ketchup. Also I flattened the bottom bun using a cake pan right after it baked. I didn't have to do much to the top bun because it naturally domed while baking. I used extra frosting to even out the domed look.
I made these Hamburger And Hot Dog Cakes as a surprise for my son's 28th birthday. In Australia we have hamburgers with the lot. I made a chocolate cake for the meat pattie. Fondant for the lettuce, tomato, cheese, egg, hot dog, kiwifruit for the pickles, dried apple (painted) for the onions, dried pineapple, jelly for the beetroot, lemon butter for the mayo and cream cheese with red colouring and icing sugar for the sauce.
I want to go to cake decorating classes now as all the family have put in their requests.

This cake was a chocolate fudge cake. I baked the top bun in my deep "Bake N Fill" pan so it had a good bun look. The burger and the bottom bun were just single layer cakes. For the icing I mixed chocolate & vanilla to get the bun color. Pickles were fondant tinted green and just roughly cut into pickle shapes. Ketchup and mustard was tinted white icing. Cake topped off with sunflower seeds.
