Homemade 60th Birthday Luau Cake

Homemade 60th Birthday Luau Cake

The idea for this 60th Birthday Luau Cake came from this website. The week before, I started with the fondant flowers as recommended. Next, I built my tiki hut using an empty (clean) can of tomatoes (29 oz can) and glued bamboo corn skewers around it with the pointed edges down to dig into the cake when assembling. Next, I took a styrofoam ball and pared it down to resemble the roof. I cut up a grass skirt and glued the pieces of the grass skirt criss-crossing the pieces until the roof was covered. The next day, I painted the tiki hut brown with water color paint.

The day before the party, I baked my 12x18x2 cake and a 9 inch round cake (the island). I frosted the sheet cake in blue to resemble water. I cut off some of the round cake so the island would slope down like a beach. I frosted the island with white frosting, and placed it on top of the sheet cake. I spread (carefully) crushed up vanilla wafers over the top of the island as my sand...and then added spots of brown sugar on top of the wafers to look like wet sand!

Then I placed the tiki hut on the cake pressing into the cake to hold the hut in place. I put some frosting on the bottom side of the roof to hold the roof on. The trees (from my son's dinosaur kit) were added along with the flowers. I finished the cake off with a towel made of fondant with a drink umbrella, some leaves for my flowers, and a border around the edges.

The cake was a hit, everyone loved it! I can't wait to make the next one!

Homemade Tiki Birthday Cake

Homemade Tiki Birthday Cake

I used 7" round, disposable aluminum tins and made the chocolate cakes from scratch for a heavier, more durable Tiki Birthday Cake. The cake is 5 layers that were on the thin side. I froze the cakes for ease of handling when frosting. I used chocolate butter cream and premade, pressurized tubes of frosting for the decorating. The teeth are mini marshmallows that I cut in 1/2 with a cheese slicer.

The cake started to tilt anyway, so I staked it up with 3 bamboo kabob skewers and hid them under frosting on top. It made it through the rather warm day and my daughter, who turned 6 LOVED it!

Since this was for an outdoor party with +10 6 year old's and several adults, I also made chocolate (and some white) cupcakes with cocktail parasols on top. The green "palm trees" are parasols that I snipped into shape.

The "happy birthday" banner was just a printout on the computer.

Tiki Luau Cake 15

It's Tiki Time!

It's Tiki Time!

I created this Tiki Cake for a Father's Day celebration but it would great at any Luau Party. It was pretty simple to put together:

1. The cake is from a fudge chocolate box mix. I baked three 7-in rounds. I leveled each round. The three rounds were stacked with chocolate fudge frosting between the layers.

2. The sides and top of the cake were frosted with more chocolate fudge frosting.

3. I used a party napkin as my guide for the Tiki face design. I used a toothpick to outline the facial features before piping on the frosting. White frosting was colored with liquid "neon" food coloring.

The Homemade Tiki Bar Birthday Cake was designed for a 21st birthday party. The cake is decorated with handmade fondant bamboo that I pained using edible paints to give a look of real bamboo.

The sand was made using brown sugar and crushed graham crackers. The sandals, hibiscus flowers, surf board, palm tree and cups were all made using fondant and gumpaste.

The Tiki bar cake is vanilla cake with a homemade chocolate fudge filling. Bottom cake is vanilla cake with cannoli filling. Fake grass was glued to cardboard to create a roof.
