I was asked to make this Homemade Hello Kitty Birthday Cake for a little girl who was turning 6. The cake is Madeira which I baked in a rectangular tin, then carved to the right shape using a template pinned to the cake with tooth-picks (I enlarged a Hello Kitty drawing onto baking paper, then cut it out). It is filled with "crema pasticcera" - a vanilla custard style filling used a lot here in Italy.
I first iced the cake with a thin layer of butter icing. Then I placed the template on the cake again, and pricked out the outline of the eyes, mouth and bow with a tooth-pick through the paper into the cake. I then used a star tip to pipe the butter icing over the cake, from the bottom up , always working in full circles. I first did the eyes, mouth and bow with coloured butter icing, then moved on to the white to finish. The whiskers are liquorish. I used pink fondant icing painted with glitter icing( found in tubes at the local supermarket), to make the name and number 6 which I stuck around the front edge.
This was really one of the easiest cakes I've ever made, and I think she looks great! Thanks to all the other beautiful hello kitty cakes on this site for your inspiration!
I baked a plain yogurt cake with a few drops of vanilla essence in a rectangular tin. I cooled it down in the fridge. After an hour or two, I shaped the cake with a Hello Kitty template I had printed out.
I prepared a buttery icing mixed with a few drops of white food colouring; I made sure it was not too thick and smooth enough. I added a few drops of milk to make it really easy to spread. I used jelly beans for the eyes and the nose but you have to make sure the size ratio is good. I found them a tiny bit small afterwards!!!
I used a ready made sugar paste rose and some smarties for the ribbon. Place the cake in the fridge at least an hour and a half before serving it so the icing and the decorations stick together.
Everybody was impressed with my Hello Kitty Birthday Cake and in all honesty, it did not take too much time to bake.

I made this Hello Kitty Birthday Cake for a friend's daughter's 5th birthday. I used heart shaped pans for the layers. I made the icing following Wilton's butter cream recipe and its the best I've found so far.
The kitty was made from rice krispie treats. I made the head and body in two pieces and the arms and legs are just fondant. I made the fondant myself, its marshmallow fondant, it is fantastic and super easy to make. I found the recipe on allrecipes.com.
The details for Kitty's face were made from royal icing and the whiskers are flower wire that I colored black. I also made the flowers on the cake with royal icing.
This Hello Kitty birthday cake was one of the coolest cakes I've done. I started with a 14" round cake. I decorated it in all different colors that matched our plates and balloons. Then I made the Hello Kitty face by using a pan that I got online. Then I put the head on top of the round cake and decorated it.
