Hello Kitty 1st Birthday Cake

by Bea
(Ontario, Canada)

I decided to make this cake for my daughters first birthday. We have this ongoing hello kitty theme in all her nursery decor, toys, clothes etc so OF COURSE her birthday cake had to be hello kitty.

I used two 9x13 cakes, and for the filling I went to the bulk food store and bought some lemon pie filling which worked perfectly and tasted even better. I frosted the cake with buttercream icing, trying my best to get it smooth. (a trick i learned is to go back after the icing starts to crust a little and use parchment paper to gently smooth out any bumps and imperfections. I actually broke my cake when i was layering it so it's not the straightest ever but it did the job :p

for the dots and the hello kitty I used colourflow icing. I prepared them about 3 days beforehand to make sure they'd be ready in time.
the eyes, nose and whiskers on kitty are made from ju jubes that i rolled into the shapes i wanted, then rolled in sugar and painted with some food colouring to enhance the colour. I stuck them on with royal icing and voila! hello kitty cake!

This homemade Hello Kitty cake was 2-8" rounds that I baked, let cool, leveled and crumb coated! After that I final topped the top only since the sides would be covered in stars!

For the picture, I printed one offline and then piped it on wax paper with piping gel! After I transferred the picture onto the cake, I began to outline it with tip #18 around the picture and I continued to do that until the top of the cake was covered. I then went back and did an outline around the first row with tip #3 to show more detail! I did the stars on the side vertically, I thought they would look better.

I iced the eyes, nose, and whiskers with tip #5. Shell border along bottom with tip #21. Name was iced with tip #5 as were balloons on the side!

Cake was huge hit!

This Hello Kitty cake made with homemade marshmallow fondant. It tasted great and wasn't too hard to use. Hello Kitty was made with a Wilton Hello Kitty pan, and she was placed on top of a 2 layer half sheet cake. I frosted heavily and let the frosting set before applying the fondant.

Whiskers were made from black Twizzlers, eyes were just black jelly beans, and nose was a pink jelly bean. I outlined the bow with black frosting, then filled it in with a star tip and added pink sparkles to the bow to give it a little more bling.

Polka dots and letters were made with brown fondant (I have the Wilton fondant letter cutters). For the polka dots I just used the back end of a star tip.

Homemade Hello Kitty Cake

I made this homemade Hello Kitty cake for my 9 year old daughter, it is a basic Victoria sponge with jam and butter cream, with two layers, covered in ready to roll icing.

I cut out the love heart shapes and flowers and decorated with pink coloured glitter sprinkles, for the top I traced a Hello Kitty picture and placed it on the icing, and used a cocktail stick to put an imprint onto the icing through the picture, I then basically did a dot to dot with the icing, and filled it in.

My daughter is extremely happy with her homemade Hello Kitty cake so that makes me happy.

Homemade Hello Kitty Cake

This is a homemade Hello Kitty cake that I made for Chloe's birthday. The image was taken from the plates and napkins they had at the party. The cake is a yellow pound cake with vanilla American buttercream filling. I don't use shaped pans due to licensing issues so this cake was cut out freehand. I made marshmallow fondant since younger children were at the party, I thought they would like it better. I painted the edge of the cake to match the way the plate was done and her dress is a layer of pink fondant.
