For this super cool Dia De Los Muertos Birthday Cake I used the Wilton smiling skull pan. I baked 2 cakes in order to be able to stack it to make a 2 layer cake. I used chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache filling. I used a box of cake mix for each layer. I made chocolate ganache from scratch and also made the buttercream. I used a gumpaste/fondant mixture to make the roses. I made the roses days in advance to make sure they would be dry when I had to put them on the cake.
I struggled to make the black icing color!! I started with a chocolate icing base and then kept adding black until I thought it was dark enough. Used some sugar skull pictures as inspiration for my skull. I knew I wanted to incorporate the flower headband since the beginning. For the bottom border I used a star tip and then dotted each star with a different color.
This is my second year making a Dia de los Muertos skull cake for my BFF’s birthday.

In the UK we have a charity day called "RED NOSE DAY" where comedians try and raise money for the UK and African charities. So I decided to make a Red Nose Cake.
I started by making standard sponge cakes in a loaf tin and a round tin then cut them up with layers of strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream. Covered the whole lot in flash fondant and put a red nose on it.
The tin I covered with foil but didn't work properly so covered it in fondant to make it look better. Writing is always hard so more practice is needed.
Hope you like it and it raised some money for charity when raffled off at work.
My son needed a cake for a "cakewalk" (a contest where whoever wins gets to choose from a table full of cakes that were made by students/parents) at his elementary school. My 7-year old told me what he wanted to do, and he and I created it.
I baked and frosted the cake and made the groundhog out of fondant (my first attempt using it to make something 3D). He put it all together and made it come to life. We had a lot of fun! (Note: the sugar flowers are store bought-- just didn't have the time!)
