Homemade 2nd Birthday Cake

This was my first cake, ever! My daughter 2nd birthday was rainbow themed, so I searched a lot of cakes and ended up just making it up as I went along. I baked the cakes days in advance and crumb coated them. The bottom 2 tiers were 2 layers each, one chocolate and one white cake food colored a different bright color. The top tier was 2 layers, one chocolate and two white, also colored. I crumb coated them and left them in the fridge until the morning of her party. I made a batch of fondant, divided it and colored the different balls for the decorations and let them dry for 3 days. I found a really easy buttercream fondant recipe on ehow.com and I liked it because it tasted really nice and and was shiny. The morning of her party I woke really early to make the fondant that would cover the cakes. I first frosted them with colored buttercream frosting. It was not as easy as I had read about, so I ended up doing each layer with two different pieces of fondant. I really like how the bow came together; I put that together last. The candles were bought from IParty. Although it came out pretty amateurish, like the shaping, I was very proud of it, and it was a big hit! It was a lot harder than I envisioned, and it probably would have been better if I wasn’t waiting to the last minute to try and put it all together. I told all my friends it was baked with equal parts of love and frustration!
