Homemade Construction Birthday Cake

This is my first attempt at a cake in a long time, I made it for my boyfriend’s nephew’s second birthday. Considering this was the first time meeting his sister, the pressure was really on!

The bottom layer is two 8″ rounds stacked, the cake is marble, chocolate and vanilla, I used vanilla icing, and 5 thick straws to provide support under the top layer. The top layer is three 6″ rounds, cake again is marble. I started out layering the base and frosting it, then put the top together and frosted it as well. the road is marshmallow fondant dyed black, I used white icing to create the land divider. After placing the top and base together, I added the grass to bring the layers together. The signs are yellow fondant and I drew the pictures and working on them with edible markers, as well as for the caution tape, yellow fondant, and I drew the stripes on. The trucks I picked up at Walgreens, there is crumpled cake in the back of the dump truck to look like dirt, and I secured the candle with icing to stabilize. The construction cones are candles, some I left full size, others were too big for the actual cake, so we cut them down, and I used fondant dyed black to create the base.
