Homemade Construction Cake

I made this for my nephew’s 7th birthday. I was lucky enough to find the small CAT toys and some construction men when looking for his present. I used two boxed cake mixes (chocolate). I baked a third of the total mix in an 8×8 pan and the remaining in a deep 9×13 pan. I covered the 9×13 cake with brown tinted butter cream frosting, to make it look like a muddy construction site. The 8×8 cake was cut in half. I secured the second layer to the first with pretzel sticks, then covered with more brown frosting. The front of the second layer was covered with crushed duplex cookies to make it look like a rocky hillside. For the trees I used pretzel sticks for the trunks and green frosting to make the leaves/branches. I arranged the toys on the cake to create the construction scene, filling the dump truck with more cookies. More green frosting was used with a small star tip to dot the caked…trying for an appearance of surviving grass.
