Homemade Tractor Birthday Cake

Rowan is mad about tractors – his favourite colour is red. I made two slab cakes sliced through with butter icing. I used a picture of a John Deere as a template and a bit of poetic licence. The coloured icing was bought. The bales are left uncovered with a disk of beige icing forked round for effect. The photo of Rowan just happened to be one we had of him in a tractor. It was for his 2nd birthday and he really loved it. One tip I was given by a professional for rolling out coloured icing I would like to pass on is to use a tiny bit of Cookeen or similar in place of icing sugar. It really works. The cake mixture was a Victoria sponge recipe but with an added 1oz of flour for every 4oz. This still makes a light cake but with a bit more substance to it. I was inspired by Coolest Cakes to make my cake and hope others are inspired also.
