Homemade Train Cake for 6 Year Old Birthday

Encouraged by THIS web site I decided to tackle the project and hope for the best. I loved using the train mold for the 3-D effect. By following the instructions exactly and using the pound cake recipe found on the box it turned out perfectly the first time!

Since my daughter invited so many guests to my grandson’s birthday party, I decided I’d better add a coal car and caboose to have enough cake to go around. Designing the caboose was, by far, the hardest thing. They are just made from loaf cake pans filled 3/4 full. Trimming the top after cooling helped make them more realistic. I used wafer type cookies (like Lil’ Debb) for the top, but would reconsider this in the future since they drooped a bit from the weight. The coal car was scooped out and filled with crushed Oreo’s which the kids loved eating!

We had the party in a park so transportation was a real concern. I put each part on an individual cake board and put them together upon arrival.

My grandson LOVED this cake and thought he was extremely special to be honored so. I almost “chickened out” and just bought something from the store. I am SO glad I went with the challenge and had this to present to him. He’ll never forget it!!

  1. Fantastic job. I know a little boy who must have been very excited for his Grandma to make such a special cake. You did a great job, and quite an accomplishment to get it safely to the party. But — are the colors really orange and blue? Aren’t those that other team’s colors?
