Horse and Horseshoe Cake

Horse and Horseshoe Cake

This horse cake was for my sister's 22nd birthday. She loves horses so I knew I had to make it with a horse.

I used a Wiltons rectangular cake pan 11x18. I mixed two cake mixes for this size pan. I lined the pan with wax paper so that after the cake was cooked it would be easy to have a flat top to decorate. My homemade icing consists of powdered sugar, Crisco shortening, milk, salt, almond extract, and vanilla extract.

I iced the cake first with a little of the icing before it was colored. Then I used a toothpick to sketch in my drawing on the cake. I tinted icing in pink, black and brown. I used the black first to outline the sketch using the writers tip then I piped in brown for the head using a small star tip. Then using the writers tip I used black and to make the mane I made the lines all one way then went over them in the other directions and so forth to make it look real.

Then I piped in the harness using pink and then the horseshoes I piped in the black "nails" and lines. I used a large star tip to pipe the edges around cake.
