My mum was celebrating her 60th birthday and her gift was a hot air balloon ride, so it seemed only fitting that she should have a Hot Air Balloon Cake as well! I made the balloon part of the cake in a Pyrex bowl and this was the basic shape with no real cake trimming needed. Just a basic chocolate cake recipe was enough to fill the bowl. I made a second smaller cake to cut out the basket shape.
I used butter cream, 2 different colours. and sliced licorice Allsorts for the 'patches' on the balloon and sour lolly straps for decoration. I used butter cream to stick icecream wafers to the basket, and jelly babies as people. Long bamboo skewers as the ropes to hold it together. Two marshmallows with a bit of string tied around were the sand bags and finally, I cut long licorice straps to give outline, because it didn't look quite right and this gave it definition.
It was easier than I first thought and it ended up being a huge hit!
This Hot Air Balloon Cake was the result of a mistake! I had originally planned to make a train cake for my two year old, but when I pulled this cake out of the oven (a yellow cake), it had risen really high in the middle and was really short on the sides so I first panicked, and then I improvised!
I made the high part into a hot air balloon, and it turned out to be a beautiful cake! The frosting was a fluffy 7-minute frosting, and I spread the blue and the red on separately, but saved some white for last, putting it on top of the blue for big, thick, fluffy clouds. Spaghetti made the ropes, a cookie for the basket, and animal cookies for the rest.
As you can see, it proved irresistible to my 2 year old!
My son goes nuts when he sees hot air balloons, he will often repeat over and over "hot air balloon, hot air balloon" and when we asked his big brother what sort of cake we should make he said that Felix would like a Hot Air Balloon Cake. I looked on the internet and found some ideas but none that I really liked, so this is my own creation inspired by some pic I saw.
It's a basic butter cream with sultanas packet mix cake. It's my first attempt at using fondant icing and Im really chuffed with the result.
