Igloo Cake

Igloo Cake

When my 3 daughters had a combined Alaska themed birthday party, my 5 year old wanted huskies on her Igloo cake, as they are her favorite dog!

I made a box cake mix and made my own buttercream icing. I baked the cake in a rectangular pan that I have which is about 10 x 8. I also baked a cake in one of my small cereal bowls to use for the igloo, and 1 regular size cupcake.

I iced the cake white with the buttercream, leaving it rough and not completely smooth. I very lightly sprayed the cake with blue spray icing I iced the bowl, cake with buttercream, then rolled out Wilton ready- made white fondant icing, and draped it over the bowl cake.

I used a butter knife to press the lines on the igloo, and placed it on the cake. Then, I took a cupcake and cut it down the middle, and laying it on its side, I put buttercream on it, then fondant, and lined it, too, for the doorway. I rolled out some black fondant, and cut it into a half circle, and put it on the front of the "doorway".

I had sculpted the huskies and the Eskimo with fondant the night before, and placed them on the cake. I piped snowballs near the igloo, and a little on top to make it look like it was snowed on. I piped the icicle border around, and then the snowball one along the bottom. Finally, I sprinkled the whole cake with edible glitter.

Homemade Igloo Birthday Cake Design

Homemade Igloo Birthday Cake Design

I baked 2, 4 inch round cakes for this Igloo Birthday Cake Design. I over-filled the second one a little bit to make a "Dome" shape, and 1, 6 inch round.

I cut out some of the middle and filled it with vanilla pudding. I then crumb coated the 6 inch cake and put it into the freezer to chill. I then did the same to the 4 inch round, but left the "dome" shape the second layer. I crumb coated it and put into the freezer to chill. Once the crumb coat is cold, I used a flat plastic spatula to smooth out the crumb coating.

I made white fondant and added a tiny bit of blue to make a swirled color, covered both in fondant, built up the entrance and made details. I then made penguins out of fondant to add to the detail. I then sprinkled powdered sugar to give it a just snowed on look. It turned out really good!

Homemade Igloo Snow Scene Cake

Homemade Igloo Snow Scene Cake

This homemade Igloo snow scene cake is a vanilla Madeira cake. I used a round cake tin/pan for the shape and added the doorway with fondant/sugarpaste. The cake is covered with the same and marked with a sharp knife.

I rolled sugarpaste out for the board and used PME snowflake cutters to print into the snowflake shapes. I made the figures with fondant and decorated with various sugar product finished with edible glitter for a frosty look.
