Little Mermaid under the sea

by Christina Parra

My husband and I came up with an idea for our niece's 4th b-day. She wanted little mermaid. We didn't want to give her just any cake but a creative and home made cake. I bought the pillars at a local art store for $5.00 and the top circular cake holder which you cannot see for around $2.00. I also put wooden stakes through the pillars for more support. I used regular cake mix for the top and bottom cakes.I then bought fondant which is how you get the smooth finish to the cake. I first put regular frosting under the fondant. The fondant only cost $5.00 at party city. I also bought food coloring and mixed it in with the fondant, which is how we got the green for the top cake and the blue for the bottom cake. We the sprayed the cake with edible "spray paint", which I got at the local art store. They cost $2.00 a can. I used the edible "spray paint" to get the edges of the cake and the pink dots on the cake. I bought the top center piece at Party City for $20.00 and the edible flounder and star fish at Micheal's the local art store.I used the extra fondant to make the sea weed and spray painted them green. I used blue frosting to cover up the press marks around the pillars. I also used pink and green frosting to add flower like decorations around the cake.
