Coolest Cakes for Luau Parties

I threw a Luau for my daughter’s first birthday party. I am stopped daily and told my baby looks like a Cabbage Patch Kid so I decided to personalize her cake to her invitations. I took a half sheet cake with a layer of plain white buttercream frosting and started with that as my canvas. I took blue food spray for the sky and sprayed that first. Then I tinted icing with a teal color from Wiltons for the ocean. I crushed Nilla wafers for the sand which tasted awesome mixed with the cake.

The rocks were purchased at a candy supply and tasted like M&M’s. The letters, castle, shells, flowers and the cabbage patch head were all made with chocolate molds. The crabs, the tree, sun, shovel, pail, the body, hair and face detail were all hand painted or created by me. I find it’s easiest to melt the chocolate in a Ziploc baggie and cut a small piece off at the end so you can pipe it onto wax paper. Make sure you make your chocolate on the thicker side so they don’t crack. I made my pieces well in advance which helped save a lot of time at the end but because I had so much I was unable to lay everything perfectly flat and a couple things cracked. So be careful. You also have to take the heat into consideration when working with chocolate since it can melt so easily. I did this at the end of August so I had a bigger challenge for keeping everything cool while I stored it. I avoid using the fridge since it can turn your chocolate white and make it taste funny.

Good luck and most importantly have fun! This cake is a good idea for Luau parties and not difficult to make.

Luau Party Cake

We were invited to a Tiki Party and needed a dessert so I thought why not a Hawaiian shirt. I used a sheet cake and cut the shape of the shirt. Because I didn’t have a wider pan it took the shape of a women’s shirt rather than a man’s but still worked. I used fondant and air brushed the color then cut and shaped the flowers out of fondant. I stuck them on with buttercream frosting.

This Hawaiian shirt was a hit and easy enough to make when you need an idea for Luau parties.
