This Mardi gras cake was for my cousin's 11th birthday and she wanted a Mardi Gras themed cake. This was extremely easy. I just made a 9 X 13 cake and carved with a knife the shape of the two masks. (It helps when you draw it out on paper and then lay it on the cake and just follow the edge with your knife.)
After that I iced on stars with the #16 tip and I used yellow icing for the eyes and mouth. The eyes and mouth were not very smooth so I used my finger to gently tap the icing down and it turned out great! I also garnished it with some green, purple and gold garnish that I got at a local party supply store. She loved it and it was so easy.

I made this Madi gras cake several years ago for my aunt. She loved visiting New Orleans and Mardi Gras. I used purple, green and yellow to freehand the mask on the cake and then put green and yellow sprinkles on it. I used gold and purple curling ribbon to add the effect on the sides. I grouped the ribbon together with tape and stuck the bundle into the sides of the cake.

My friend's daughter wanted to have a Mardi Gras party for her 16th birthday. She gave me a napkin for her party and I came up with this Mardi Gras cake for the party. I just copied the napkin on my scanner and printed it out on my computer. I then used piping gel to trace the design on wax paper and turned that over onto the cake and traced it using buttercream icing.

I made this Mardi Gras cake for a school Mardi Gras party. I had an image in my head on how I wanted to do it and it worked out.
I made a 12x18 rectangular cake with a 10"round on top. It has butter cream icing and I made the topper with a mock Styrofoam cake and wrapped it in wrapping paper and found the other items at a party store.

When searching for recipes and pictures of cakes for a cake to serve at a Mardi Gras party, all I could find were recipes for king cakes which, while authentic, are somewhat of a pain to make - and, in any case, are more like a sweet bread than a cake.
I came up with the following by downloading some free clip art, blowing it up, and tracing onto wax paper to make the stencil.
After baking a chocolate cake and frosting it with butter cream icing, I traced the back side of the wax paper stencil with icing gel and then placed it on top of the cake to form the outline of the masks. I then outlined the masks in black icing, filling it the smiling eyes (and patting down with finger coated in cornstarch, to make eyes smooth).
I then piped in green and purple stars - one color for each mask. Afterwards, I sprinkled Mard-Gras-colored glitter (green, purple, yellow) over the cake and masks (green on the green mask; purple on the purple; all three on background), and added Mardi Gras color confetti sprinkles. Shell border accented with Smarties and mini M&Ms.
