Mermaid Cake

I have to say that i love this site! i wanted some good ideas for my birthday cake and i love the little mermaid so seeing all the other great mermaid cakes i had to give it a go!

i made a chocolate marble cake (using blue and green food colouring for the other colour with the chocolate – sea greenish!)i did one a Pyrex bowl and then made a second mixture in a standard sponge cake tin. i sandwiched the two together using chocolate spread. i took the legs off the doll and made a small hole for her to sit in once the cake was cool.

i added black food colouring to the butter cream to make it grey and used a smoothed it in places so it looked like a rock. i used edible glitter in silver too on the rocks for the ‘wet’ look.

i attempted making the fodant icing myself (which was going great till i added the blue+green food colouring)then it was quite sloppy so i put it in the fridge to hope it set more!

i got glitter icing in a tube in green and used it to make seaweed looking bits coming up the rocks and did a thick line either side of the tail and carefully spread it up and over the tail to give it a shimmering effect. i use simple icing sugar and blue food colouring and pasted it along the bottom of the board for the water.

all my friends were impressed!
