Over The Hill Cake

Front and Back of the Hill
This cake was made for my Brother-in-law's 50th Birthday, as well as my mother's 71st. It was inspired by various *hill* cakes I saw online and so I decided to attempt my own version. My brother in law isn't going over the hill without a fight. He's clinging to the top of the hill but he's only using one hand because he has to hold his drink can in the other. My mother who has progressed much further over the hill has settled herself among the rocks and is very relaxed, typical mom, easy going. Everyone really enjoyed this cake as it isn't a typical cake at all. Seeing it from the front you wouldn't imagine the other side being a wall of rock.
The cake is made out of three various sized round cake pans and each layer is cut and shaped into an uneven, bumpy hill. The entire cake between layers and on the outside was covered in a regular cake icing before the marshmellow fondant was placed over it. All the rocks and figures are also made out of marshmellow fondant and the flowers and other bits of grass and such are regular cake icing.
It was fun to create this cake and have it so appreciated. Anyone facing an over the hill birthday can appreciate this cake's good humor.
