Pirate Ship Cake 69

Captain Matthew's Mega Pirate ship.
I made this pirate ship cake for my son's 4th Pirate Birthday Extravaganza. I spent a lot of time reading about the other pirate ships on this website. All the entries were truly helpful.
I started with a chocolate scratch cake base that made two 9x13" cakes. Then I used a box mix for two 8x8 cakes. I layered the two 9x13 after refrigerating them for a few hours with butter cream frosting in between. Then I put it in the freezer for a hour and put it back in the fridge. The two 8x8, put in fridge first.
Assemble: I laid out the two big 9x13 on the board and cut the 8x8 cakes in halves(4). I layered two halves in front for the bow, sliced off the sides to create triangles, then flipped the triangles and put them on the top bow to create height. For the back I layered two halves of the 8x8 with butter cream to create more height. I put in fridge for hours. I highly recommend freezing before shaping cake.
I used my son's pirate ship and lots of ideas from this website with pirate cakes to carve the ship and give it a "real" ship look, and get decorating details. I covered the cake in chocolate butter cream and added extra thick bakers fudge supreme to give it a darker look. I used skewers to create the look of wood on the sides. I used yellow frosting to highlight the curves of the ship and add depth. I used long chocolate wafer cookies for the sides of the ship and regular wafers for the windows. I kept it in the fridge until we had to leave.
I assembled the cake at the party site with the pirate kit pieces;mast, cannon, pirates, etc....
The cake feeds about 40 and weighed about 15 pounds. Most said it looked like the "Black Pearl" from the movie being the same color.
