Princess Castle Cake

This princess cake was for my daughter’s 5th birthday. I found the idea for this cake on this website, and then added a few things of my own.

I started with a 9″ square cake pan, for the base of the cake. I then used a 6″ round pan for the top. I used two layers of each of these. For the turrets, I emptied and cleaned cans, such as from green beans or corn. I sprayed and floured them well, and baked some of the cake mix in them. I did find that I had to make sure not to fill them too full, because they ran over in the oven. I used BBQ skewers for added stability to help hold the towers on the cake.

The pointy roofs of the towers were made from waffle cones, which I cut the bottoms off of to the desired height. I then iced the cake using homemade buttercream icing. I think that this is a little bit harder to work with than icing with shortening, but the yummy taste is worth it to me.

The windows and doors were made from graham crackers, and I stuck princess stickers on each one. I had tons of compliments on this cake, and in fact made one again for my niece’s birthday.
