Running Shoe Cake

My son is a Comrades marathon runner here in South Africa, Kwazulu Natal.  For his 32nd birthday I baked this cake for him.  It was a chocolate cake decorated as a shoebox with fondant sheets and round circles. This was the easy part.  The shoe gave me grey hair!  I eventually took my own running shoe (which was still new), wrapped it in plastic (Glad wrap) and formed the fondant around the shoe, leaving the sole opened.

Next day I finished the top decorations – like the Nike signs and shoe laces.  The pattern on the white part (little holes) was created by (don’t laugh) rolling my cellulite body roller over the fondant! Just remember to remove the shoe from the “mold”, very carefully, before it is completely hard! I left it hollow and completed the trimmings around the shoe to look like a sole.
