Shield Cake

My daughter’s 6th birthday was going to be held at the Armory Museum where she would get to cut her cake with a real medeival sword- we thought a shield cake would be perfect. Got great ideas from this site and decided to do it myself rather than spend the $75+ the bakery wanted to charge to do it.

I used 2 boxed cake mixes and ‘fixed’ them to make it more homemade – used a stick of real butter in place of oil, added 1 box of instant pudding, and 1 cup sour cream to batter- I made each box mix separately then combined them before pouring into pan. You will need a really big bowl for two mixes. I used a disposable foil 1/4 sheet pan for baking. I trimmed the shape after it was baked.

I had pulled basic coat of arms images, designs and shapes from computer and my daughter decided on the one we used. The melted chocolate over wax paper design (from another submission) was genius and I used that for the lettering, fleur de leis, and knight logo of the museum. It was a perfect way to get the image without having to freehand it or be an artist. I was able to use old english lettering from the computer then trace it backwards to get her name and I could play with the size to get the right fit for the cake so it wasn’t too big or small for the actual cake. Make extra letters just in case one snaps as you are lifting and moving them into place.

I used premade frosting – 4 jars white. one container went as a first layer to ‘crumb coat’ it since it was a chocolate cake and chocolate crumbs are pesky. I froze cake slightly to keep crumby layer easier to decorate. Mixed liquid cake decorating colors to white frosting to get red/yellow parts- I used just a little more than 1 whole can for both colors. Piped on black tubed frosting for the banner outlines. Stuck the chocolate designs on frosting and completed the shield cake.

The cake was a huge success and all the kids asked for more! I will always come to this site from now on to get great ideas for cakes. I saved loads of money and my daughter got a one of a kind cake made just for her.
