Why should you buy a used cake pan on eBay?

- On eBay you'll find almost every cake pan that has ever existed
- You know exactly what you're getting (and you know it'll work... ;-)
- You'll probably use it only once, so why even think about buying a new one?!

I made the cake from a packet vanilla cake mix, which I make all my kids' birthday cakes from. Mostly they don't call for eggs to be added or butter, but I always add it and people always compliment me on my cakes being so moist. The kids also love them. I make the buttercream icing and spend most of my time coloring it and chasing my kids away from me while I am doing it :-)

I made this Spider Man cake for my son who was turning 3 and has a very bad case of Spiderman envy, he will only answer to Spiderman at the moment. The cake went down very well and I also had lots of orders put in from all the other mothers.

Firstly, I don't bake! I order a half "plaatkoek" from our local supermarket and request that they don't put any icing on. Then - I spend some time on the internet or coloring-in books looking for pictures.

Once I've found something to work with, I print and enlarge to an A3. I then cut out the picture and place it on the cake, holding it with pins. I cut around the edges so that you have the basic outline.

I then spread a thin layer of butter icing over the whole surface (for each cake I use a 500g brick margarine and about 1kg icing and a lot of different food colorings). Use a toothpick to make "pencil lines" for your insides. I fill in between the lines first and then do the outlines.

For this Spider Man cake, I did the inside lines first and filled the red in afterwards - much easier to do it the other way around. Power ranger:

For each cake I use a 500g brick margarine and about 1kg icing and a lot of different food coloring.

This spider man cake is simply a round cake iced in my sons favorite color- orange! Then I piped a spiderweb on and added one of his spiderman crawling guys to the top. He loved it!

For this Spider man cake I did a follow up from a toy that my son found of Spiderman hunched down and shooting his web. We wanted something different and came up with this.

I used a small tip on the decorating bag and colored frosting and there you have it!

The kids all thought is was a hit!

For my son's 5th birthday we had a Spider man party. I didn't want to do a traditional sheet cake or the Spider man form pan. A friend of mine saw a version of this "cupcake" spider man cake in a local grocery store and I modified it.

I purchased the Spider man cupcake liners and baked about 50 cupcakes (although I didn't use all of them). I used my family cake recipe (you may need to double the recipe - depending on how many cupcakes the recipe will make).

You will need about 5 cups of icing to make this spider man cake - one cup white, one cup black, and three cups of red (these are approximations for the icing; depending on the consistency of the icing and tip sizes used you may need more or less). To achieve a true black color add about 1 tsp of cocoa powder to white icing; mix well then add Wilton black icing tint. For a true red mix Wilton tint colors Red Red and No Taste Red.

I took a 13x19 cake board and formed a head shape making sure the cupcakes are as close together as possible. I started decorating with the eyes. I used black icing and the #4 tip to outline the eye shape. I filled in the eyes using the #21 (star) tip and white icing. I went around the outside of the eye with the same tip and black icing.

The rest of the spider man cake was filled in with red icing using the #21 tip. Make sure to fill in the empty spaces between cupcakes. I did this by placing the star tip against the very edge of the cupcake and pulling out slightly to make a larger star.

Lastly I used the #4 tip and black icing to add the webbing of the face. With the leftover cupcakes I iced them red and added the spider web to two of them. Under the Spiderman face I spelled my son's name using the first spider web cupcake for the first letter and ended it with the last spider web cupcake and put the candle on it.

To serve the spider man cake - just pull one of the cupcakes and eat! This spider man cake was a big hit at his party!

This Spider man cake was done for a friend of the family. Her little boy loved all things that had to do with super-heroes; Spiderman, Batman, Superman, etc. His mum wanted to really surprise him by having a Spider man cake made. She didn't have any ideas on what sort of position she wanted him to be in, just that she wanted Spiderman.

With not a lot of inspiration to go on I set about searching for decent pictures of spiderman that might be a good Spider man cake design. I finally found one in an advertisement for the new Playstation Spider man game; a picture of Spiderman climbing up a building.

It took me forever to enlarge it, as the colours were too dark for me to simply photo copy it like I had with my previous cakes. So I ended up drawing grids on a large piece of paper and transferring the image square by square. I used the same method to decorate this Spider man cake as the last few times.

I enlarged a picture from a colouring book to the right size, and used that as my template. I cut around each of the pieces and put them on the Spider man cake. I removed each one as I iced that section, leaving the other pieces there to provide the outlines.

After this I simply piped on the outline with chocolate icing. For the face I used a very small nozzle to get very fine spider web lines, for the rest a larger nozzle was used, as the fine nozzle proved to be pretty frustrating to master.

The little boy was so surprised to have a Spider man cake. The look on his face was great when he saw his Spider man cake!

Instead of using the Spider Man shape pan, I like to create a scene, which tells a story.

This Spider Man cake is for a 3-year old boy in school party. He wanted Spider Man jumping from somewhere high. I thought about the bricks and walls. but too plain. I got this idea from Wilton decorating book where they use cookies for the buildings (which looks more like remote controls, I'm sorry!).

So I used fondant for the buildings instead; that way I could do a lot more details. like the school, name of buildings, etc. Instead of putting the cars going in circles around the cake, I thought an accident scene would be cool and then Spider Man on the bike coming to the rescue!

My son Patrick and nephew Anthony LOVE Spider Man! For his fourth birthday party he asked for a Spider Man party and Spider Man cake. Although I like the Spider Man cake pan I didn't really feel like buying it, plus I wanted something different that they would really be excited about.

To make this Spider Man cake I used two boxes of cake mix and two containers of white frosting tinted with blue, black, and a mixture of the two to make gray.

I baked the Spider Man cake in two 9 x 13 pans, cut the tiers and then cut layers to fill with sliced strawberries and whipped cream.

To hold the tiers steady while icing the Spider Man cake, I stuck a thick skewer through the Spider man cake from top to bottom.

This Spider Man cake was done for my son's 6th Birthday. Since Spider Man is so detailed, I figured the bigger, the better (or easier). I had bought a party game with Spider Man on it and folded it up so that the head would fit into my copier/printer. I made a copy of it and then cut it out and traced around it once I had the base icing on.

The spiders were actually my son's idea! I think it turned out great!!!!

The treats are rice crispy treats that I colored red and then decorated with icing for my son's party at school. They were a HUGE hit!!!! Even the little girls were excited about them!

I bought the Wilton Spider Man Mini Treats pan. I had a hard time finding it - but got a new one from EBay. The trick behind the colored rice crispy treats is putting the food coloring in the marshmallow mixture before you add the cereal. I then used the mold to make the heads, let them cool and then put the faces on. The most time consuming part was the webs.
