Spongebob Cake

My son decided he had to have Spongebob cake for his birthday. I searched around and decided not to buy a one-time use pan. A little odd for a 22 year old, so I knew I wouldn't be using it again! Instead, I found the party plates and napkins at a local store, and copied the square face from a napkin as best as I could.

My son decided he liked the blue swirls that looked like the ocean waves, and the smiling face.

A rather simple design, using a square cake pan and two layers. I drew the design on with a toothpick, barely cutting into the 'crumb layer' of icing. I added the flat iced areas for the 'sponge holes' and the mouth. I then piped the outlines and filled in the areas of color mostly with star tips. The 'holes' in the sponge were a slightly darker color than the yellow of Bob.

Over piping the teeth and tongue gave dimension. I dipped my finger in corn starch to smooth down the lines the tips left on areas I wanted rounded.

This one turned out to be very fun for the party goers, as well as making it.
